Celebrating Unsung Heroes: National Caregivers Month 2024

In November, we come together to honor and celebrate the incredible contributions of caregivers during National Caregiver’s Month. This year, 2024, marks a poignant time to acknowledge the tireless dedication of those who provide essential care and support to loved ones behind the scenes. National Caregiver’s Month is a time to recognize the unwavering commitment and compassion that caregivers bring to their roles. From managing medical appointments and medications to offering emotional support and companionship, caregivers play a vital role in the wellbeing of the elderly, chronically ill or special needs individuals in our community. Their efforts often go unnoticed, but their impacts are profound.

Caregivers face unique challenges, including physical and emotional strain, financial burdens, and the need for self-care. Many juggle their caregiving responsibilities with careers and other personal commitments, masking their role even more demanding. This month provides an opportunity to provide awareness about the importance of caregiver support and resources, advocating for policies that address their needs.

One of the key themes of National Caregiver’s Month 2024 is “Caring for the Caregivers.” This initiative emphasizes the necessity of selfcare for caregivers, encouraging them to prioritize their own health and wellbeing. Resources such as support groups, respite care, and counseling services are highlighted to ensure caregivers have the tools they need to thrive.

As we celebrate National Caregiver’s Month, it is essential to express gratitude and support for the caregivers in our lives. Whether it is a friend, family member or a professional caregiver, taking the time to say thank you, offer help or simply listen can make a significant difference in their journey. Let us honor the selfless dedication of caregivers and work together to create a world where their contributions are recognized, valued, and supported. National Caregiver’s Month is a reminder that behind every act of caregiving lies a story of love, resilience, and unwavering devotion.

International Stress Awareness Week

 

International Stress Awareness Week, held annually from November 4th to 8th, is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about stress and its impact on mental health. Established in 2018 by the International Stress Management Association (ISMA), this event seeks to combat the stigma surrounding stress and mental health issues, while promoting effective stress management strategies.

Stress is a common experience that affects people worldwide. According to recent surveys, four in ten people report feeling regularly stressed, which can lead to significant health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and mental health disorders. International Stress Awareness Week aims to address these issues by encouraging individuals and organizations to take proactive steps in managing stress.

Bio Ability offers Stress Management Health Coaching as part of our Adaptive Lifestyle Program. Individuals will have access to the tools and support they need to effectively manage stress and improve their quality of life. November Holiday Schedule

We will have abbreviated hours for the Thanksgiving holidays. Bio Ability will be closed Wednesday through Sunday, November 27-December 1 for the Thanksgiving holiday. If in doubt, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us to confirm the schedule.

Caregiver / Parent Night Out

Drop off the kids and have some time to yourself.  Use it as a date night or just a night to yourself to do whatever you like. November Class Schedule

It is always best to call for the most current availability.  We have a variety of adaptive Gymnastics, Ninja and Fitness classes and one-on-one class openings. You can see this by clicking the register now button at the bottom of the website page or by calling 470.560.3981. If we are not in the office, please leave a message and we will return your call.

If your child has a few friends that want to take a class together just give us a call and we will work with you to find a day and time that we can accommodate a class just for them.

Exercise of the Month: Sensory Exercises

Sensory exercises engage the 5 senses (touch, smell, sight, taste, and sound) as well as the vestibular (balance) and proprioceptive (position and movement of the body) systems. Many people think sensory activities are only for children or only necessary for early brain development. Everyone in every stage of life can benefit from sensory activities. In fact, research from the National Library of Medicine shows that intentional engagement with sensory interventions can:

  • Improve cognitive development
  • Teach self-regulation
  • Manage anxiety
  • Encourage an interest in discovery
  • Enhance memory
  • Develop and maintain fine and gross motor skills
  • Teach problem-solving and critical thinking

Sweet Potato & Black Bean Chili

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium-large sweet potato, peeled and diced
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 4 teaspoons ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon ground chipotle chile
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  •  cups water
  • 2 (15 ounce) cans black beans, rinsed
  • 1 (14 ounce) can diced tomatoes
  • 4 teaspoons lime juice
  • ½ cup chopped fresh cilantro

Directions

  1. Heat oil in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add sweet potato and onion and cook, stirring often, until the onion is beginning to soften, about 4 minutes. Add garlic, chili powder, cumin, chipotle and salt and cook, stirring constantly, for 30 seconds. Add water and bring to a simmer. Cover, reduce heat to maintain a gentle simmer and cook until the sweet potato is tender, 10 to 12 minutes.
  2. Add beans, tomatoes and lime juice; increase heat to high and return to a simmer, stirring often. Reduce heat and simmer until slightly reduced, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in cilantro.
