The Ability Connection

Issue #47

Invisible Disabilities Week 2026: Seeing Strength Beyond What Is Visible

October is Invisible Disabilities Week, a time to raise awareness and understanding for individuals living with conditions that may not be immediately apparent. Invisible disabilities can include autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, epilepsy, chronic pain conditions, learning disabilities, anxiety disorders, and many other challenges that impact daily life while remaining unseen by others.

At Bio Ability, we recognize that every child’s needs are unique. Many of the children we serve face challenges that are not visible on the outside but can affect movement, coordination, attention, sensory processing, confidence, and social participation. Our adaptive fitness and gymnastics programs provide a supportive environment where children can build strength, develop motor skills, improve body awareness, and experience success at their own pace.

Through individualized instruction, sensory-friendly approaches, and encouraging coaching, Bio Ability helps children of all abilities gain confidence, increase independence, and discover their potential. Invisible Disabilities Week reminds us that understanding, inclusion, and acceptance can make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families every day.

Together, we can help ensure that every child is seen, supported, and celebrated for who they are.

Down Syndrome Awareness Month 2026: Celebrating Abilities and Achievements

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, a time to recognize the unique strengths, talents, and contributions of individuals with Down syndrome while promoting inclusion and understanding in our communities.

At Bio Ability, we are proud to support children and young adults with Down syndrome through our adaptive gymnastics and fitness programs. Individuals with Down syndrome may experience challenges with muscle tone, balance, coordination, strength, and motor skill development. Regular physical activity can play an important role in improving these areas while also enhancing confidence, social interaction, and overall well-being.

Our adaptive programs are designed to meet each participant where they are, providing individualized instruction, positive encouragement, and opportunities for success. Through gymnastics-based activities, strength training, balance exercises, and movement skill development, participants build physical abilities while having fun in a supportive and inclusive environment.

During Down Syndrome Awareness Month, we celebrate the determination, accomplishments, and unique gifts of the individuals and families we serve. At Bio Ability, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to grow stronger, gain confidence, and reach their fullest potential.

Together, we can continue creating a community where abilities are recognized, celebrated, and supported every day.

Exercise of the Month: Gradual Eye Contact Exercise

Eye contact can be challenging for autistic individuals because it may feel overwhelming to the brain and nervous system. The best strategies respect these differences and help build confidence with visual connection in a comfortable, gradual way. For more information please read here Eye Contact in Autism: Building Visual Connection Strategies
Here are some exercises you can try at home:
  • Nose‑bridge focus: Sit side‑by‑side with the person; have them focus on the bridge of your nose instead of your eyes.
  • Moving object tracking: Use an object of interest for the child to look at. Try to move it slowly across their visual field, encouraging to follow with his eyes.
